Alex has a first class degree in Chemistry from the University of Oxford, which covered the areas of organic, inorganic and physical chemistry. His final year research project focused on novel methods of [18F] fluorine labelling for use in medical imaging. He has also obtained further industrial experience in the field of formulation sciences at Merck, Sharpe and Dohme where he developed novel methods of analysing tablet coatings.
Following entry into the profession, Alex has obtained a Masters degree in Management of Intellectual Property from Queen Mary University of London where he was awarded the ‘Director’s Prize for Academic Excellence’. He qualified as a Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney in 2018.
Alex works on patent drafting and prosecution before the UK IPO, EPO and other national patent offices. His work also involves coordinating international IP prosecution and advising on IP strategy for a range of clients from start-ups and SMEs to large, multinational clients. Alex has both drafted and prosecuted applications over large array of technical fields from oncology and autoimmune diseases to an alternative energy sources and fertilisers. He is a member of the EPO Opposition and Appeals team and also advises on freedom-to-operate issues.
With regard to trade marks, as well as filing and prosecuting trade mark applications around the world, Alex is also regularly involved with pre-filing trade mark searches as well as advising clients on trade mark selection and strategies for obtaining trade mark protection, taking into account potential infringement, registrability and non-use issues.
Alex is a Director and also sits on the firm’s Operations Committee which is tasked with taking responsibility for making key business decisions and effecting such decisions across the firm.
